The qualification system for the World Chess Championship has changed several times throughout its history. Until 2000, the first stage of the cycle consisted of Zonal tournaments, regional qualifying events that determined which players advanced to the Interzonal stage. Cypriot players began participating in these events in 1975, initially competing in Zonal 11. Following later reorganizations of the zonal structure, Cyprus was assigned to Zonal 1.5.
In the early 21st century the qualification process changed. For European players, the European Individual Championship became the initial qualification step, from which players could advance to FIDE World Cup or FIDE World Championship.
A further reform occurred in 2014, when zonal tournaments were reintroduced for Europe. Since then, Cypriot players have competed in Zonal 1.10, which is the zone of European Small Nations. Zonal 1.10 is also the Individual Championship of the European Small Nations Association (ESNA).
So far, only one player representing Cyprus has successfully qualified from the initial stage of the World Championship cycle, and has done so twice. On both occasions, the achievement belonged to Vassilios Kotronias, who advanced to the FIDE World Championships of 1999 and 2004.
Below follows a list of all participations of Cypriot representatives in the Wolrd Championship cycle. Detailed results to be added.
The information does not cover the Women World Championship, as no Cypriot representative has participated in this qualification process so far.
